Key IV: Engaging School and Community Settings
How do we engage students in the at-risk setting?
|
The new
Kentucky Framework for Teaching, modeled after the work of Charlotte Danielson,
incorporates the idea that educators need to engage all students, including
those at risk, in the learning process.
This engagement is evidenced in Danielson’s third domain, which
evaluates instructional practices taking place in the classroom. Not only does the framework evaluate the use
of discussion and questioning techniques, but also goes on to review how well
students are actually engaged in the learning environment.

What things need to be considered during instruction to ensure student engagement in learning?
|
There is one critical element that determines if students are actually engaged in their learning or just being compliant and on task. That element that is required is whether or not students are developing their understanding of ideas and concepts based upon what they are actually doing. Are students debating, discussing and answering higher level thinking questions, or discovering new patterns? Are students allowed some choice in how they are learning and making intellectual contributions to the class as a whole?
The Kentucky Framework for Teaching outlines the expectations for teachers when considering how well students are engaged in the classroom. Some of the critical elements to consider include: Activities and Assignments; Grouping of Students; Instructional Materials and Resources; and the Structure and Pacing of the lesson. These elements combine to evidence optimal student engagement in the teaching and learning process during a lesson. There are also numerous research based strategies to assist with student engagement such as the work of Kagan, Schmoker, APL, technology use in instruction, the use of social and emotional learning, and project based learning initiatives. |
