Key III: Realistic, Hopeful Pathways
ILP (Individualized Learning Plan)
|
What is the ILP and how does it enhance student goal setting?
The Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), powered by Career Cruising, is an internet-based tool designed to initiate career and education exploration activities and help students bring together their academic achievements and extracurricular activities. Each year, as required by the Kentucky Department of Education, all students grades 6-12 complete specified activities to update their ILP. Information students provide in the ILP about college and career plans is then utilized by the guidance department to match students with scholarship applications and colleges. How can I access the student ILP website: Access to the ILP is gained by going to the website: www.careercruising.com/ilp/ How is the ILP beneficial to students? The ILP is beneficial in many ways. For example, in high schools students can use the information to explore careers; find careers that match skills and interests; create education plans; establish personal goals; create, maintain, and change resumes; track community services and experiences, work experiences, career-planning activities, and extra-curricular and organization activities; explore colleges and post-secondary opportunities that match career, post-secondary, and life goals; and collect personal information such as assessment results and advising activities. How does a student gain access to his or her ILP? Username (for both student and parent) is the student's ten-digit Kentucky State ID number Password - Students and parents have separate six-digit passwords. These passwords are set by the state and cannot be changed. Students may obtain their password from their teachers or school counselor. |
What is NaviGo?
NaviGo is a group of former educators and community leaders who saw a need to aid students with the challenges in the tough transition from high school to the next educational or professional level. Using an innovative inquiry-based approach for high school students and their families, NaviGo's staff of highly trained and motivated coaches helps young people go far beyond the walls of their classrooms. It is critical that young people learn how to become self-motivated. The process of understanding what motivates and inspires the student we work with is at the core of NaviGo's mission. NaviGo works to create a thread that connects a student to successful outcomes. How does NaviGo benefit students? A team led by Kentucky's 2010 Superintendent of the Year, Tim Hanner, created NaviGo with two primary goals: To help students discover their true talents, passions and optimal career choices as well as help families save money on future college and/or career expenses. NaviGo staff are flexible and work with each school to meet their unique needs and situations-including large schools, small schools, individual grade levels, etc.. What is taking place in Fayette County Public Schools? Some of the work in Fayette County Public Schools includes initial and regular follow-up staff training tailored to the needs of each school, student training to positively impact student voice throughout the school, team Captain(Students) training and follow up activities, lesson plan development for staff tailored to the unique needs of each school, homeroom development including activities, data collection on student achievement to determine program effectiveness and to make mid-course adjustments to positively impact student achievement, etc. For more information, please contact Tim Hanner at 859-802-1303 or [email protected] |
Video of instructional strategies to target at-risk students
|
The video demonstrates three strategies needed in order to
meet the needs of at-risk students.
First, you will see an environment that has been created to be “safe”
for students to learn and discuss the topics at hand. Second, you will see students connect to the
opener, a video clip documenting the struggles of a North Korean prisoner, who
escaped from a North Korean concentration camp.
Last, you will see how students ideas and are valued.
Simple strategies to use for at-risk students: Create a safe environment with clear expectations and procedures. This will allow less reluctant students to take a risk and get engaged in the curriculum of study. This allows educators the opportunity to create and build relationships with their students. Relationships lead to trust and trust lends to an openness and willingness for at-risk students to become appropriately engaged in instruction. Give students an opportunity to connect to the curriculum through real world experiences. Intentionally select videos that spark interest or connect with students beyond the classroom. At-risk students are more successful if they can see the relevancy in their instruction Give students an opportunity to learn from one another by giving them a "voice." By giving students and opportunity to feel heard, they in turn will feel valued. Students who feel valued perform at higher academic levels than students who do not |
