What's working at Glendover Elementary?
ESL Services
|
Glendover Elementary School is a true multicultural school
with students representing some two dozen nations. This diversity makes Glendover unique in the
fact that our school English as a Second Language program must work diligently
to address the needs of this population.
Our school employs four full time ESL teachers working at every grade
level. Not only do these teachers meet
with small groups of students throughout the day, they also push into
classrooms to help our ESL population students show success in the classroom
with non-ESL peers. These teachers help
provide academic interventions as well as behavioral ones. In addition, they go the extra mile to also
include other at-risk students with support if the need exists, meet with
parents regularly to share progress and develop relationships, work closely
with classroom teachers to provide interventions appropriate to ESL students, and
work with other school staff to ensure that the students they serve are growing
both academically and behaviorally.
In addition to our ESL population of students, most of whose parents come to study at the University of Kentucky, Glendover Elementary also has a very high population of Hispanic students. Some are ESL qualified, and others are not. Our school staff works closely with this at risk population to remove as many barriers to their education as possible while providing the best possible whole child education as possible to these students. Some of the services provided to this population include tiered behavior and academic instruction, use of science and technology to engage, and the use of Positive Behavior Supports in the school. |
